1005 | "Butte, October 19 '96 14 men were killed instantly at the granite mountain shaft of the North Butte company, at 130 o'clock this morning, by an explosion of 500 pounds giant powder. All the bodies have been recovered, don't all have not been identified only to their mangled condition. Other men, all working at the service, or seriously injured. One of them, Ed Bray, a shift boss died later. The explosion was heard in all parts of the city. The property loss at the mine was small, and will probably amount to less than $1000. Bray had one side of his lungs out. Another injured had his foot blown off and without taking an anesthetic submitted to the surgeon removing his leg. «b»Were Lowering Powder «/b»Three topmen were engaged early this afternoon in lowering powder to be 2,800 level. Powder is sent down the mine every other day. Today all the powder except one mine carload had been lowered. One car containing giant powder was at the collar of the shaft. This was to be lowered, after which a number of bosses and miners were to go below. Five of these men were waiting in the dog-house, a small room near the shaft. John Davey, the only one of the three topmen carmen to survive the explosion, left the car to get a timber 100 feet back from the shaft. He was the last man to see the others around the collar of the shaft before the explosion. Davey says that no one was near the powder set and Bray, a boss, who stood about five or 6 feet from the car. Davey heard a terrific explosion and was blown to the ground. It was not seriously injured. «b»Cause Unknown «/b»No one could get any theory as to the cause of the explosion. The blast swept away the frame structure in which the men were waiting at the shaft, together with the air-shaft beside the steel gallows frame. Painters were at work on this air shaft at the time of the explosion. Neither was killed, but both were injured, one sustaining a broken leg. The steel gallows frame was damaged places, one big steel support was twisted. Windows at the Speculator mine, 300 yards away, or blown out and other glass in the neighborhood destroyed. Many of the bodies were in fragments and were picked up in sheets. Workmen were searching the timbers in the room and the doghouse found a dismembered way. Others had found a fragment of the skull on which a portion of curly hair remains. Gisham was the only man at the top of curly hair. It is believed that these fragments are all that is left of his body. «b»Body Torn to Pieces «/b»Robert Watson's body was found at the bottom of the shaft, 2800 feet below the surface. He had been blown into the shaft and dropped to the sump, only the hand remaining of the mass of mangled flesh to give it human semblance. 850 feet away a body glove with two fingers in it was found. If the feet away to remain in an engine house were killed. John D. Pope, general manager of the North Butte company, said this afternoon that he had no theory as to the cause of the explosion. "To the best of my knowledge", said Mr. Pope, "no one was at the car of powder when it exploded. There were between 10 and 12 boxes of powder on the car when it went off. Ithere were 10 boxes, that means that there were 500 pounds of giant. The last man at the car was John Davey, who tells me that when he left the car a moment before the explosion, no one was beside it. So far as I know no one had been careless in handling this power, and, as I say, I cannot lay the blame on any one." The accident will not retard work at the mine, the explosion damaging only the "chippy" compartment, the other two compartments being uninjured. 400 feet from the scene of the explosion a shoe with a foot in it was found and also a number of sleeves with fragments of arms. Shift boss and Bray died of his injuries late tonight, bring the total of the deaths of 215, and the finding of the legs in the debris leaves the coroner believe that there is still another body in the wreckage. Two more of the injured party or death. «b»The Dead «/b»James A. Blow, aged 23, assistant foreman Jay. D. We, aged 24. George Larkin, aged 29. John McCauley, aged 52. John Winston, aged 38, shift boss. Lacey Graham, shift boss, aged 39. Ernest Watson, aged 32, shift boss. R. I. Watson, a sampler. Richard Gendle, aged 36, electrician. Ed Carlson, 36, top Carman. Paddy Morrissey, shift boss. William Butcher, aged 32. William Denton, aged 38. James Powers, aged 35. Edward Bray, shift boss. «b»The Injured «/b»Peter H. Brown, Carpenter. William Valentine, Carpenter. Phileas Blanchett, miner. A. K. Bruce, painter." | Gendle, Richard (I35397)
