CLARENCE H. NAABE
Clarence H. Naabe, 90, of Elmer, went home to be with the Lord on June 16, 2010, at Friends Home in Woodstown after a brief illness.
The husband of Vivian Mickel Naabe, he was born in Williamstown in 1919. Clarence was a lifelong resident of the Elmer area.
Clarence graduated from eighth grade in Williamstown and served in the Army during World War II.
Beginning in 1937, Clarence was employed by Iles & Shimp where he was a service manager from 1947 to 1961. For 25 years, starting in 1961, he owned and operated HiWay Garage on Route 40 in Elmer.
His community service began as a member of the Elmer School Board of Education from 1949 to 1974, where he was involved with the construction of the current school building.
In 1959, Clarence was one of the community members who founded the Elmer Ambulance Corps.
He was active at the Friendship Methodist Church for nearly 50 years, serving in numerous positions including co-chairman of the building committee to rebuild the church after it was struck by lightning.
From 1974 to 1999 he served on the Elmer Community Hospital Board of Directors and participated in directing the transition to South Jersey Hospital System.
Clarence volunteered for Meals on Wheels and served on the Board of the Salem County Office of Aging.
From 1990 to 2003 he served as chairman of Chestnut Grove Cemetery Committee, creating fundraising efforts and actively overseeing many improvements to the cemetery.
In addition to his wife Vivian, he is survived by daughters from the marriage of Clarence and Edna, Marion (Ron) Zajac of Mercerville, Doris (Dan) Moore of Daretown, and Betty (Jim) Coombs of Elmer; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bob Naabe of Woodstown.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Edna (Coles) Naabe; and brothers Russell, Melvin and Bill.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Friendship Church in Monroeville on Saturday, June 26 at 5 p.m. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials be sent to Elmer Ambulance Corps., P.O. Box 812, Elmer, NJ 08318 or Friendship United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 149 Friendship Road, Monroeville, NJ 08343.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Padgett Funeral Home, Upper Deerfield Township.
