Beatrice Bertha Corkum Wehrwein, 93, a long time resident of Farmingdale, and business woman of Augusta and Gardiner, Maine, died May 25, 2007 at Newfield House nursing home in Plymouth, Massachusetts following a long period of failing health. Her husband of 30 years, Edward Rudolph Wehrwein died May 30,1971.

Mrs. Wehrwein was born March 10, 1914 at home on a small farm in Farmingdale, Maine, daughter of Jessen Alexander Corkum and Mildred Isabel Swift Corkum.

She attended Gardiner schools often walking 2 miles in snow storms and sub zero weather, and in her later childhood and teen years she peddled milk on her way to school.

In 1936 with her parent's assistance, Mrs. Wehrwein opened a hat shop in Gardiner. The shop grew to include a complete line of women's apparel and accessories and became The Accessory Shop. In 1948 Mr. Wehrwein joined the business which expanded to Livermore Falls, Me. and Waterville, Me. In the 1960's they consolidated and opened Town N Country Fashions in Augusta, Me. Mrs. Wehrwein enjoyed and took pride in window decorating and pleasing her customers.

Mrs. Wehrwein was a member and leader of several retail and merchant associations in the Kennebec Valley region. As a member of SCORE, she enjoyed sharing her experience with businesses needing assistance. In 1975 Mrs. Wehrwein was named to Who's Who of American Women.

Mrs. Wehrwein was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gardiner where she worshiped regularly until her health prevented her from doing so. She was a Carry On Club member and held various leadership positions.

Mrs. Wehrwein was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and rotated through the chairs and became Worthy Matron.

Survivors include three sons, The Rev. Dr. Gary E. Wehrwein of Keene, N.H., Gregory E. Wehrwein of Farmingdale, Me., R. Glen Wehrwein of Newton, Ma. and a daughter, Gail Beth Wehrwein Syriala of Pembroke, Ma.; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
