      Clara Belle Colby Bowman was born in Kent, Michigan, April 13, 1878, daughter of William W. Colby and Rosetta Lovejoy Colby. Her parents moved to Nebraska where she married Elmer E. Bowman October 22, 1902. With her husband and parents, she moved to Laramie, Wyoming soon after.

      She attended the University of Nebraska from 1889 to 1900, and received her normal diploma from the University of Wyoming in 1912. She obtained her bachelor's degree from the same university in 1917, and the master's degree in 1929.

      She taught from 1895 to 1945 in various high schools and grade schools in Wyoming and Nebraska. She was a member of the faculty of the University of Wyoming from1919 to 1931, and principal of the Cody Junior High School from 1932 to 1938.

      She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society, and Kappa Delta Phi, a national education society.

      Mrs. Bowman held several records in the field of education. She was the first student in Wyoming to take courses being organized on the retarded child, the first in the state to administer the Binet Intelligence Test to students, and the first to receive a bachelor's degree in elementary education in Wyoming.
