"Smitty" Smith, 73, of West Burlington died at 11:58 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010, at his home. Born November 10, 1936 in Farmington, he was the son of Leo and Mary Townsend Smith. On June 25, 1979 he married Sharon Weller in Kahoka, Missouri. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Farmington High School. He was a heavy equipment operator for American Ordnance, retiring in 2000. He was active in Boy Scouts and Jaycees and collected heavy equipment toys, watch fobs and books on heavy equipment. He enjoyed surfing the internet. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Smith of West Burlington; two sons, Curtis (Mary) Smith of Milford, Illinois and Robert W. Smith of West Burlington; one daughter, Pamela (Dean Johnson) Smith-Horton of Danville; four step sons, Ernest (Linda) Miller of Farmington, Dennis Miller of Burlington, Rodney (Sandra) Miller and Donald (Dana) Miller both of Jacksonville, North Carolina; five step daughters, Pamela Canty of Sperry, Cheryl Hollenbeck of Burlington, Susan (Randall) Swank and Sandra Miller both of West Burlington and Amy Miller of Yarmouth; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Sgt. John Miller and James Smith and his parents. Friends may call from noon until 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 3rd, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. The graveside funeral service and interment for Mr. Smith will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 4th, at Greenglade Cemetery, Farmington. The Rev. Dan Buck will officiate. A memorial has been established for the family.
