Charles Dominick Bertie, age 86, of Independence, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Cherryvale Nursing and Rehab Center.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 5th from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Webb & Rodrick Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Department of Cherryvale Nursing and Rehab Center and may be left with the Chapel.
Charles was born April 13, 1927 in Glassport, PA, the son of Dominick Bertie and Nettie Bell (Plaster) Bertie. He attended and graduated from Glassport Public Schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, following his Honorable Discharge from the U.S Navy, Charles came to Independence to visit his brother where he met and married his future wife Ivy Orlena Scott, the couple was married on August 16, 1952.
Charles had been employed by Dana in the Maintenance Department. Charles had been a 50+ year member of Grace Memorial United Methodist Church. Two weeks before Charles passed he has honored with a Veterans Appreciation Ceremony by Harry Hynes Hospice Staff where he received a Veterans Appreciation Flag Pin.
Survivors include son: Terry Lee Bertie of Independence, daughter: Tammy Lynn (Robert) Fienen of Independence, 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a brother: Frank Bertie of Cherryvale, KS and one sister: Thelma Bertie of Glassport, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife; Ivy Orlena Bertie, a daughter: Antonia Dustman, a granddaughter: Denise Bertie as well as a brother William Bertie.
