EAST LONGMEADOW - Roland E. Butler, 101, of East Longmeadow, passed away peacefully on Thursday December 22nd at Mercy Medical Center. Born in Holyoke, MA to the late George and Martha (Hall) Butler, he was a longtime East Longmeadow resident and member of the First Congregational Church in East Longmeadow. Roland attended Dean Academy and Rhode Island School of Design and served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked for Package Machinery from 1946 until his retirement in 1975. Roland met his wife, Dorothy Jean Damm, in the Appalachian Mountain Club where they were both active in the Berkshire Chapter. They married in Cape Girardeau, MO in October 1948. Dorothy predeceased him in 1997. Roland is survived by his four sons, Laurence of East Longmeadow, Malcolm of Fargo, ND, Kenneth of Albuquerque, NM and Douglas of Centerville, MA; two grandchildren, Nicholas Butler of Fargo, ND and Monica Butler of Albuquerque, NM and by longtime family friend Betty Rintoul of California. Roland was an artisan/craftsman, engaging in a wide range of interests throughout his long life. He was an accomplished potter, painter, metalworker, lapidarist, glassblower and machine designer. He engaged in many of these hobbies during 37 years of retirement, designing his last annual holiday greeting card this December. Family and friends are invited to meet for a Memorial Service for Roland on Saturday January 14th 2012 at 11AM at the First Congregational Church, 7 Somers Rd., East Longmeadow, MA. Burial will be private for the family in Greenlawn Cemetery, East Longmeadow. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roland's memory to the Open Pantry Community Services, P.O. Box 5127, Springfield, MA 01101-5127. hafeyfuneralservice.com
